Brave New Winter
2006
The exhibition Brave New Winter explores the enormous efforts made every winter in the Alps in order to present them as the perfect skier’s paradise.
The winter landscape of the Alps is changing. Everywhere technical interventions adapt it the necessity brought along by the modern vacation society. Ever newer, better and bigger slopes, cableways, skiers lodges and hotels are waiting for us. But more then everything else skiing slopes in the most perfect conditions are prepared for us with the help of snow machines. And it is exactly this expectation for slopes covered in a thick layer of snow that leads to the most absurd developments in the Alps as not even during a winter rich in snow a slope would be able to take millions of downhill runs between November and April without being boosted with man-made snow. Nevertheless, it seems, that there is little awareness that without the efforts put into the production of artificial snow, the whole industry around winter tourism would fall apart.
